Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui of Japan sometime around nineteen twenty-two. According to the most reliable history, Usui had climbed Mount Kurama for a period of fasting and penance when he felt a great spiritual force. It was at this time that he conceived the idea of using Reiki to heal the body, first trying it on himself and later on members of his family. He was astonished at the results, as long-term illness and discomforts responded to the treatment, and so he began to share and teach Reiki.
Reiki is actually nothing more than a method of promoting physical, emotional and spiritual relaxation and balance. Whenever your life force energy is week or low, you are far more likely to become ill or over stressed; when it is high or strong, health, peace of mind and happiness will result.
How Long Has Reiki Been Used In Healing?
While the formal consideration of Reiki as a healing therapy began in Japan in the early part of the twentieth century, the world has long known of the laying on of hands for healing. The practice has existed for thousands of years and in many different cultures. In some of the oldest religious literature from many cultures, the laying on of hands was done to transmit or transfer a spiritual blessing or power, often with healing as a side effect; over the past three millennia, however, it has been most commonly associated with healing.
Today, the concept of laying on of hands for healing is found most commonly among Pentecostal, Charismatic or Evangelical Christians, though it is not limited to them alone. There are many doctrines that promote the concept of healing in this manner, the most common of which is the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Jesus Himself laid hands on the sick, the blind, the lame and others when He performed His miraculous healings, and commanded Christians to do so in the Great Commission.
- The Gospel of Mark, Chapter 16, Verses 17-18 (abbrev.): And these signs shall follow them that believe… they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
While some believe that there are no longer any miracles, but to say that would mean that Jesus Christ has changed. However, the Bible says in Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever.
If Jesus has not changed, then His followers are still under the same Great Commission, and part of that command is that we “lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
What Does Reiki Mean?
Reiki is a compound word which is made from two Japanese words. The first part is Rei, which is most properly translated as God’s Wisdom or Higher Power. The second part is Ki, which is often translated directly as Life Force Energy, but can also be translated as spirit, mind, heart or air. Taking all of these into account, the most common English-language definition of Reiki is Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy, but it could also be translated directly as God-Guided Spirit.
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.
