Christian Aspects of Reiki Healing

What Is Reiki?

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power,” and Ki which is “life force energy.” Therefore, Reiki actually means “Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy.”

As a Devout Christian, I do not follow the “Eastern” methodology that forms the basis of what most Practitioners do when practicing Reiki. Instead, I have made a study of Biblical Scripture in order to determine what my Lord Jesus Christ would have me do.

In Mark 16:18, Jesus said, “…they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” In His own ministry, we see many examples of Jesus healing the sick by a laying on of His hands, and His Aposles and followers did likewise. This tells me that “laying on of hands,” which is the entirety of what a Reiki Practitioner does, is Scritpurally correct.

However, many Reiki Practitioners involve themselves with other forms of spiritulalism that have their roots in Eastern Mysticism, and I have chosen to reject such things.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

This passage says that a Christian should always do everything in Jesus’ Name, and I believe that this also applies to my Reiki Practice. Before each session, before I even begin I pray that God’s Will be done in the life and body of the client. If the client is willing, I ask them to join me in that prayer, and I always pray in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What Is A Reiki Session?

A Reiki Session involves the client laying on a padded table while I lay my hands gently on (or above) various parts of the client’s body, beginning with the eyes. Each placement lasts for three to five minutes. Often, I will sense a need to remain on one placement longer, and many clients are amazed when it happens on a place where they have felt some pain or had some problem in the past.

For most, the session feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki refreshes and re-balances the whole person, including the body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. I have honestly seen miraculous results, and this technique has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady. It works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote a more rapid recovery, and there are surgeons who actually prefer to have a Reiki Practitioner present in the Operating Room during surgery.

Is Reiki A Religion?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not any kind of religion or cult. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to benefit from Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on your belief at all. Healing comes from God, and many people find that the Reiki Experience puts them more in touch with their own faith.

A religion is a standardized system of beliefs and ceremonies that guide and control interactions between followers and whatever Higher Power it claims as its own. Reiki does not require anyone to believe any form of doctrine, nor participate in any kind of worship.

A cult, on the other hand, is a system of beliefs that are generally in opposition to the beliefs previously held by its members, and usually requires a departure from a former faith. It tends to isolate its members from the world and even from their own family, friends and loved ones in order to make them concentrate on the goals and ideals of the cult’s founders and leaders.

From these definitions, we can see that Reiki is neither a religion, nor a cult. If any Reiki Practitioner ever asks you to embrace a belief that is not your own, makes you uncomfortable or seems contrary to what you believe, my best advice is to simply walk away.

How Does Reiki Heal?

As I mentioned above, Healing comes from God. Reiki is not any form of magic or power, and a Practitioner is not endowed with any special abilities.

However, there are many instances in historical tales of men and women “laying hands” on the sick and seeing them recover or improve. These stories can be found in many cultures, but the most common source of them is in The Holy Bible.

Jesus laid hands on the sick as He healed them, and He commanded His followers to do likewise, and to expect recovery.

Is Reiki Healing Truly From God?

As I was learning about Reiki and making my study to determine whether, as a Christian, I could practice this technique, I had an amazing experience. While in prayer, I “heard” a voice speak to me. It said “Go and heal in My Name, as I have commanded you.”

I know in my heart that this was God speaking to me, and all of my life has led me to the point of learning this technique. God has allowed me to see many wonderful and miraculous things from even the beginning of my association with it, and I look forward to seeing many more. 1 Corinthians 12: 8-10 says For to one is given word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

If we are to believe one part of the Bible, we are to believe the entire Bible. We are not to pick and choose which parts of the Bible we want to or wish to believe are true, because the Bible in its entirety is true from beginning to end. GOD is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and what worked when Jesus walked the earth has not changed, nor have His commandments to His followers. I believe wholeheartedly that GOD is still in the business of healing, often through His followers and through those to whom He has chosen for the gifts mentioned above. I have been doing this over two years now, and I have seen GOD move through me in some pretty miraculous ways, ways that could have only come from Him. I’m not the doer, I’m simply part of the doing. I know that GOD is the one True and Great Physician who can, has and does heal according to His will for your life.

Is Reiki Healing Done By Satanic Forces?

There are some who claim that this is true, and that God no longer does miraculous works in our day. However, there is nothing in the Bible that ever indicates Satan ever was involved in healing. It is interesting to note, however, that the Pharisees said the same thing of the miracles and healings performed by Jesus:

Matthew 9:43 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

As for the claim that there are no longer any miracles, that would mean that Jesus Christ has changed, but the Bible says:

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and forever.

If Jesus has not changed, then His followers are still under the same Great Commission, and part of that command is that we “lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

The Bible says that a good thing comes from a good source, and that it is by the fruit of a tree that it is known. Healing through the laying on of hands is a good thing, and must therefore come from a source that is good. If by my work someone finds healing or comfort, then I am comfortable that the source of that healing is God through His Son Jesus Christ, just as it was in the days of the Apostles and their own disciples.
